I resigned from a job I loved because I thought I'd lost my mind.
Not dramatically. There was no breakdown, no scene. Just a slow accumulation of small humiliations. Walking into a meeting and losing the word I needed. Reading the same paragraph four times. Finishing a conversation and being unable to recall, an hour later, what I had agreed to. I had spent two decades as a person known for seeing the pattern before anyone else in the room — and suddenly I couldn't reliably remember where I'd put my phone.
So I did what a lot of women do. I assumed the problem was me. I decided I was no longer fit for the work, wrote the letter, and stepped back.
What had actually changed was my brain chemistry. Not my capability.
Nobody had told me the difference.
Here is the part that should be on a poster in every GP waiting room.
Oestrogen isn't only a reproductive hormone. It's a neurological one. It supports verbal memory, mood regulation and cognitive flexibility — which is to say, it supports your ability to find the word, stay steady, and change tack mid-sentence. When it declines, those buffers thin out. Progesterone, which is calming and sleep-promoting, drops too. Sleep fragments. Cortisol sensitivity rises, so ordinary stress lands harder than it used to.
Three regions feel it most: the hippocampus, where memories are filed; the prefrontal cortex, which handles focus and decision-making; and the amygdala, which processes emotion. Retrieval slows. Reactivity rises.
None of that is decline. It's recalibration — a documented, temporary, hormonally-driven shift in how your brain allocates its resources. For most women, the fog is a weather pattern. It moves through.
But it moves through slowly, and while you're inside it, it looks exactly like a permanent forecast. That's the cruelty of it. The symptom and the catastrophic interpretation of the symptom arrive together.
Menopause tends to land in the years of peak load. Teenagers. Ageing parents. The most senior role you've ever held. The household admin that somehow still routes through you.
So the cognitive shift doesn't arrive in a quiet room where you can observe it with interest. It arrives on the busiest day of your busiest decade, and it announces itself by dropping the balls you have always, always caught.
This is why the standard advice can feel so thin. Sleep hygiene and magnesium are genuinely useful and I recommend both. But they don't touch the actual problem, which is a mismatch between how much you are carrying and how much your brain can currently hold at once.
You need to either carry less, or find something to help carry it.
I work with organisations on how to use AI well, and I've watched it become genuinely useful in midlife for reasons that have nothing to do with productivity.
Used properly, these tools are cognitive scaffolding. They hold the thing you can't currently hold. Three examples from my own life:
Meeting recall. Record it, transcribe it, ask for the decisions and the actions. This is not cheating. It's the same principle as glasses. You have not stopped being able to see; you've added a lens.
Decision scaffolding. When working memory is maxed, you can't hold six variables at once — which makes even small decisions feel enormous. Talking a decision through with an AI tool, out loud, in a mess, and asking it to reflect back the structure of what you just said, externalises the load. The clarity was already yours. You just couldn't stack it.
The hard email. The one where the words won't come. Ask for three versions, then rewrite the one that's closest in your own voice. The blank page is the barrier, not the writing.
A note on how to do this well: tell the tool how you actually work. Your energy patterns, your red flags, the way you like information delivered. In my book I call this your user manual, and it's the difference between a tool that produces generic output and one that's genuinely useful to you.
Offloading is not atrophy — but there is a line, and it's worth naming.
I think of it as three intelligences. There's human intelligence, which is yours: judgement, taste, the thing your body knows before your brain catches up. There's artificial intelligence, which is fast, tireless and profoundly literal. And there's what emerges when the two work together — which is more than either alone, but only when the human stays in the chair.
Use these tools to hold what's heavy. Don't use them to decide what matters. The recall can be outsourced. The discernment cannot, and in midlife the discernment is the thing that's actually getting sharper.
Because that's the part of the story we never tell. Yes, fast factual recall softens. But something else is arriving: pattern recognition built from decades of evidence, a much lower tolerance for nonsense, and a clarity about what deserves your attention that you simply did not have at thirty.
You're not losing your mind. You're changing what it's for.
I learned while living in New Zealand in te ao Māori, this stage of life is when a person becomes a kaitiaki — a guardian of knowledge, of place, of what comes next. Not a fading. A returning.
I wish I'd had that language when I wrote my resignation letter. I didn't need to vanish. I needed to be understood, and I needed some help carrying the load while the weather passed.
If you're in the fog right now: it's real, it's biological, and it isn't the end of your competence. Talk to your GP about your options. Tell someone what's happening in plain words.
And let something else hold the calendar for a while.
