My cup was empty. This wasn't something that happened overnight. No, it was something I noticed over time. Walking down the same long corridor to my office every morning, watching the seasons change through the windows, I found myself feeling like I needed a rest, some quiet, even a holiday.
I think years go by quickly and days go by slowly because our minds need new experiences to soak up and store as beautiful memories.
So I bought the cheapest exercise book I could find—the type you can scribble all over and not care about. I wrote a list. What could I be doing if I wasn't sitting at my desk? The ideas tumbled out of my mind onto the page.
The first item on my list was so simple: wash my car. It was one of those jobs I never seemed to have time to get around to doing. I filled my bucket (metaphorically and physically) and went outside.
As I was washing my car, I suddenly felt the wind brush through my hair. I stopped what I was doing, turned, and basked in the dappled sunlight on my face. This wasn't just washing my car—this was living.
I ticked items off my list as I went, both big and small: start learning French, go for a beach walk, eat ice cream and pizza. Then I expanded into journaling and art journaling, including following The Unexpected Gypsy on YouTube.
I looked up the happiest countries in the world and learned about Hygge—the concept of enjoying a cosy environment, meaningful connection, simple pleasures, and being present. Now I spend my evenings with soft lighting and mugs of hot chocolate that warm my soul.
Self-care doesn't have to be expensive, lavish, or time-consuming. It's the little drops of personal wellness and self-nurturing that fill your cup. Listening to your favourite music, reading, watching movies, meeting up with a friend—the options are endless.
Being happier and healthier gave me the confidence to move into a job I love and to enjoy being out in nature again.
My cup is full now, and I hope this inspires you to fill yours too.
